Candlemas is a celebration that commemorates the purification of the Virgin Mary after childbirth, according to Jewish law, and the presentation of Christ in the Temple. It is a feast that honors Jesus and Mary's holy humility. We can think of ourselves in the position of Anna and Simeon, eagerly waiting for Christ who is our salvation and our light in the darkness. The festival is named Candlemas because candles were traditionally blessed during this time. Candlemas is celebrated on February 2 of every year and we can all take part in the beautiful tradition of having our candles blessed. On Saturday and Sunday, February 1st and 2nd, you may bring a candle that you would like to have blessed during any of the weekend Masses. The candle you bring should only be used for devotional purposes. The blessed candles may be used often, during days of illness, sorrow, all feast days, anniversaries, and when Holy Communion is brought to the sick.
